Befriending Southwark's ElderlyHelp us to care for those most vulnerable in your local community
Our mission
Dulwich Helpline and Southwark Churches Care exists to tackle a real issue of isolation and loneliness amongst older people in central and south Southwark. We provide an invaluable complementary service to statutory provision, aiming to improve the quality of life of many older people in the borough who are vulnerable, housebound or living alone.
We believe that it is vital for all older people to feel part of our community and we aim to demonstrate our commitment to this through the befriending service we offer. We promote independent living and positive mental health, thereby reducing the demand for and reliance on statutory services.
Our services
Our main service is to provide a volunteer befriender to visit an older person in their own home, on a one-to-one basis. We also provide some practical assistance in basic DIY, escorting and light gardening.
Becoming a volunteer
We are always looking to welcome new volunteers. Our volunteers can be anyone aged over 16! All volunteers undergo an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
Fundraising
Around half of the organisation's funding comes from Southwark council. The day-to-day running of the project is managed by a professional team of qualified and experienced staff. The Project Manager is responsible for fundraising along with the Board of Directors.
