Our servicesServices we can offer to local older people
SCC is the leading specialist organisation providing befriending services for older people in the community in central and north Southwark.
SCC has 100 volunteers and 200 befriending clients.
SCC is working in collaboration with another specialist befriending organisation, Dulwich Helpline (DHL), which works in the south of the borough. As part of this collaboration and in order to save costs, SCC will be moving its office base to share with DHL from mid October.
SCC wishes to emphasise that the main focus of its work remains the centre and north of the borough where we are seeking to use our specialist knowledge and experience to remain a key player in the provision of services to isolated older people living in the community.
Can we help?
If you are:
- aged 65 plus
- live in SE1, SE5, SE15, SE16, SE17 and roads in the London Borough of Southwark in SE8 and SE11
- are isolated and / or lonely
We can offer the following services to you:
Befriending
A visit from a volunteer once a week for an hour or two for a chat and some company in the older person’s own home.
Light Gardening
Our gardening volunteers can make a visit up to twice a year to cut a lawn, do light weeding and general tidying.
Practical Tasks
We can provide a volunteer to escort an older person on local shopping trips, helping hang curtains, washing windows and reading mail.
Please note that we do not provide any type of personal care, cleaning or shopping.
Social groups
We currently have a weekly social group on Wednesday mornings in Peckham. Local older people can come and socialise with people of a similar age, as well as do chair-based exercises and learn about issues that may be of interest to them- healthy eating, personal safety, chiropody, reminiscence, arts and crafts and more. Refreshments are available, as well as transport to and from the venue. Please contact us for more information.
Refering an older person
If you want to refer an older person in Southwark to us for one of our services, please get in touch.
Our services are available to those who are particularly vulnerable and/or isolated. We receive referrals from social workers, health professionals, families and people can also self-refer. Our staff will then visit the person to assess whether our service is suitable and answer any questions they may have.
